FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
So on my trip last week, I had a rear flat. I destroyed the OEM "wrench" (using that term generically) for the 27mm nut on the rear axle.
Need to replace that. Looking for something that is small, lightweight, strong, and will accept a "cheater bar" - so it will pack better under the seat.
What do you use?

Adjustable wrench? That's what I carry. Weighs a little more but means I can carry less items.

Shit. I’ve never even opened an fjr “toolkit”. Guess I should. I’ll likely follow and purchase whatever tool you settle on. I’d like something lighter than a giant adjustable wrench, but I’m not above carrying the one from my tire-change toolbox in the garage.
By the time I added a socket, ratchet, and cheater bar/tube, I’d probably be up to the weight of the bigass adjustable wrench.

They do have adjustable with lightening slots cut in the handle so it's considerably lighter. At one point, I had most all the individual tools you'd need to do most anything you could run into on the road. One by one, I pulled stuff out and now it's down to not much more than an adjustable and 3-4 Allen wrenches.

Here ya go, buy a set so you have one for the front.... might wanna consider a piece of pipe to extend it.
Helpful tip perhaps.... the nut is a Fuji-loc, and won't ever vibrate loose. Torque spec of 90 ft. lbs. is awful high, dial that down by 10 or so..... still plenty of clamp load.
Although I carry the tools to get a wheel off, it's rare one would have to do that.......

Re: FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
I have a set of those for my DR650. I bought them because on the dual sport, I need to be able to spoon the tire on and off on the trail. Those are longer and cumulatively heavier than a 10" adjustable wrench. That will fit in my tank bag, which I always have with me - even if I don't have the saddle bags or the top box. I just torqued my rear axle to 75 ft pds (spec is 95 - wtf?). I can easily loosen it with a 10" adjustable wrench. And that makes it a fit for the front axle bolt too.raYzerman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 5:12 pm Here ya go, buy a set so you have one for the front.... might wanna consider a piece of pipe to extend it.

I have a drill press. I can lighten it up a bit. I think this is the best idea so far.

Re: FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
You should just throw it in the trash. All the tools in there are made from butter. I found this out in Florida when I thought I'd test it out taking my wheel to Cycle Gear. I could feel the wrenches bending in my hand. Before I caused any damage I ran to the hardware store and bought some tools.bill lumberg wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 4:42 pm Shit. For me, my tools don't have to fit under the seat because I have three giant bags.

Re: FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
On my dirt bike, I carry the wrench Ray linked in my Camelbak. On my FJR, I carry a 3/8 ratchet, a deep socket for the rear and the key for the front. Weighs less than a can of soda. I don't need a cheater bar but if I did, I would just step on it. I have a small Craftsman tool set that sits very flat under the seat. No idea where my OEM tool kit is. It might be rolled up under the seat also. If it is, I should probably throw it away. I bet that is knocking 2-tenths off of my 800 mile time.

I carry a socket for front and back, with a tee handle. I can step on it to get it loose.
Fits under the seat. Never used it personally, but have loaned it once.

I never carry anything to remove the rear wheel. That's time for the cell phone, CAA/AAA and credit card.
Tire patch stuff, compressor, multi-tool, selected Allen wrenches and sometimes a 17mm wrench if I expect to need an oil change on a long trip.
(I'll be carrying a bit more on the new-to-me BMW F700GS because I'm more likely to hurt it on the rougher roads and the fact that it is a BMW and not a Yamaha.)
IMHO, the only tool of any value in the OEM tool kit is the spark plug socket...

Re: FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
I have never used the OEM tools, but I think they’re still under the seat somewhere. With a top case, I’ve never been short of cargo space, so I’ve always kept my took kit in a textile bag about 10x5”. I just take the 27mm socket and 1/2 to 3/8 adapter to fit the kinda long, locking head, flexible ratchet. With a 90# torque spec, I know what it “feels like” to get that torque with the 11” ratchet and by bending the head over, it still fits in that military-style tool bag. I also take the hex adapter for the front axle, a multi-meter, metric socket set, Allen wrenches and assorted combination wrench’s….all in that one bag, along with zip ties, fuses, duct tape and assorted hardware. Plus there’s an air pump under the seat and a plug/patch kit in the bag covering the aux fuel tank…along with jumper cables. Oh yeah, I also carry a large adjustable wrench.

... Except for the screwdriver. It's a JIS one, fits all the cross-headed screws and fasteners on the bike perfectly. If a screw is a bit tight, it won't cam out nor strip plastic, which is what can happen with any other spec of cross-headed screwdriver.gixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 6:03 pmYou should just throw it in the trash. ...bill lumberg wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 4:42 pm Shit. I'll do a few extra curls to get ready to pull extra torque for the loss of lever arm (not). However seriously, the fact that it is a closed end wrench makes it much easier to push with my leg. Using the adjustable open end wrench that way is kind of a recipe for disaster - rounding off that nut would be "interesting" to say the least.

Back before I retired I had a water jet at my disposal and made one of these without the small hole out of tool steel. It's in my small travel bag that I carry while on longer trips.Dale_I wrote: ↑Fri Oct 14, 2022 3:07 am I picked up one of these... covers the front and rear.

I've always used a large adjustable spanner - sorry, crescent wrench - to do the rear wheel nuts on all of my FJRs, never been a problem until my latest bike. I couldn't undo it using that for my first tyre change and it did start to mangle the nut.
Had to go and buy a decent 6-sided socket and the largest breaker bar available at this store, about 18 inches long. To get the socket on the nut I had to file the flats to alleviate the damage. Even then I had great difficulty undoing it, at one stage as I was pulling up on it, the bike lifted off one side of the centre stand, could have been a disaster (bike would have fallen onto the side of the car, mucho, mucho dinero). That nut was TIGHT.
No way could my new breaker bar fit under the seat, though the socket would. But then the nut should never be that tight.

Rounding off an axle nut after getting a rear flat in who-knows-where sounds like insult to injury. Pretty disheartening.Hppants wrote: ↑Fri Oct 14, 2022 11:02 amAt 8.4" long, I think it might just fit under the seat. Score!! Re: FJR tools - rear axle nut - what ya got?
Wrench received - fits perfectly under the seat and I can remove the nut set at 75 ft pds. Added bonus - has a 14 mm 6 point in the inside of the wrench.
I ordered a 6mm long (5") allen key and a 10/12 mm combo box wrench. Now with the OEM JIS screw driver, OEM axle allen key, and my multi-tool (pliars), I'm in better shape for a road side repair with the FJR, with everything under the seat and a minimal of weight addition (less than 1/4 pound).
Happy camper here.
