I'll start this thread for the 2006 FJR project bike....... located an engine, now to get it here...........
So, this is what it all looked like at the local Yamaha dealer...........
Bike in a basket, or a few baskets..... it's all there, really! Darned thing followed me home in my trailer today, so here's where it stays for the winter. No time to work on it until spring.........
Engine torn right down to split cases, pistons out, stuff everywhere..... this engine will not get rebuilt, not worth it.
Will we take bets I will or will not have parts left over when it's all done?

So whats the backstory on this? I'm assuming somebody brought it to a dealer because they didn't use genuine YammaLoob. But how does it get that blown apart?
My prediction. Its sits in Ray's shop for next 2 years, then he'll part it out.

If the head and pistons are still good from the old engine, there are coatings they can put on the piston crown and head and valve faces that block heat. Supposedly this keeps the heat of combustion in the chamber better, pushes it out the exhaust and improves exhaust velocity and scavenging. Also keeps the engine cooler and overall more efficient.
Not saying you're going to gain 110% but legend has it, it is a noticable difference.
There is also an oil-phobic coating they put in the oil wetted areas of the block and head which helps the oil flow to the pan, keeping more oil where its needed, in the pressure system, not sticking to the nooks and crannies of the block.
I think the Gen 2 has teflon coated skirts already.
Something I will do if I ever take apart an FJR engine. Seeing as this is the first I have heard of that's been apart significantly, I will probably just keep riding and wear out tires.

Backstory, my buddy was having issues with starting when hot, so took it to the Yammy dealer. The mechanic there is factory certified, has won the Canadian and World championships for being the best Yamaha mechanic. So, he tears down the engine and measures everything, says some parts are under factory limits... dunno what, I have yet to talk to him, he only worked there on Tuesdays and the dealership is now closed for good. BUT, I can't help thinking the guy is way too anal, and there is such a thing as some shit don't matter in engines... he went too far.. so basically, it became a basket case that I can't trust to put that engine back in. I don't know what piston was in what bore, etc. and it would take new parts and likely restoring the Niksil coating on the bores. Ain't gonna happen. It is far less money and aggravation to get the known good engine I've already located. Let's face it, the bike isn't won't sell for a whole lot more than I put into it, so this is just a fun project where I can do a bit better than breaking even. Yes, I could part it out, but I also think that would be a waste. Hope to have this done next year.
The project looks bad, but once the new engine is back in the frame, it's just a matter of putting the cosmetics on.... I'm sure I'll eventually study the old engine in the interests of FJR science, but mostly it's a bunch of scrap aluminum.
My buddy went and got himself a 2013 FJR, some miles up in Bungie's neck of the woods... Espanola, I believe.

Yup, Trailside Sports in Espo had a used 13 in stock for a while. Oddly enough, it kept me from putting mine up for sale while I was entertaining thoughts of a smaller, less capable bike
I've always said a sport touring bike with a large v-twin would be a very desirable package to me. I used to love my 1600 meansteak engine on the highway.
I've got an old Wankle Rotary engine just hanging out (in a crate, no basket however). It's probably 30 years old, but last I knew it worked and Ray, you'd be the only one with a 3 stroke triangle piston engine ....in a motorcycle!
