That is the first time I've seen more fuel in than is specified to hold, and I've never heard of anyone putting in the max. 6.6 gals. Was it cold out?

Remember this is Cav47 we are dealing with here. If you have ever seen him you know he is the embodiment of the expression "10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag"! So if anybody could do it, he could.

Honestly I 1000% percent trust my stocky friend from Illinois but it kind of makes you question the accuracy of the gas pump. I have known even the best maintained of measuring instruments to get out of calibration. Sometimes on purpose.

Middle 60s temperature wise. It is not the normal place I get gas, but is was. Casey's national chain store.

I filled it like always do. I typically fill it just past the bottom of the "stainer". I jostled the bike some when it got to around 6.5 to get some of the air out. I will admit, I was somewhat intrigued as to how much was really gonna go in there. And it was on the side stand.

On my Gen 1 bike, twice I ran out of gas. The stories behind that are entertaining, but I'll spare you the details. Both times, at two different gas pumps in Arkansas, I put 6.6x gallons in on the side stand.

On my crashed Gen 3 bike, I never got a chance to put more than 6.4 gallons in the tank.

On my current Gen 3 bike, on the last day of my recent Arkansas adventure, the bike farted (but didn't die) while climbing uphill. This seems ironic because IIRC, the fuel pickup is at the back of the tank. Regardless, it happened, and at the top of the hill, I pulled in the clutch and started coasting. I was blessed to find the one pump fuel station my GPS was guiding me to at the bottom of that hill. There was no other gas within 10 miles of that station. It took 6.59 gallons on the center stand. I remember I was at 56.x miles on reserve.

This provides evidence that the FJR will pull the entire contents of the tank into the motor. I was originally thinking that when I'm babying the throttle, my bike surely gets at least 40 mpg. Using simple math, 1.5 gallons of reserve (where there is 1.6 in capacity), I was thinking that 60 miles on reserve is the limit. Now, I'm going to pull that back to 50 miles on reserve as my benchmark.

That looks strangely familiar...

BTW, I think you can get a matching cylinder so you only need one key.

Spare key I got for the bike has a little metal tab that has the key code on it. Should be able to take it and have it keyed the same easily. Anyone have a list of Yamaha paint codes or should I just take it in with one of the side bags and see if someone can match the paint?

FJRs all ship with a 3rd lock cylinder specifically for that top box. Most of them get lost or thrown away. Chances are the PO did not include it with your bike but they are usually found under the seat. Just a thought for you.

It would be a bit expensive with shipping but the best option for getting FJR components painted to match EXACTLY is through Garauld. He maintains an account on this forum as well as the other two FJR forums. I have seen his work and it is without equal.

Took it out for a nice ride to start taking pictures for Tour of Honor and Team Strange Love and Merci tours. Got one PA memorial and a post office for letter E.

Was going to ask what all is supposed to be under the seat. There seems to be lots of rubber straps holding nothing down. Just the little tool pouch. ImageImage

As far as I know the extra rubber straps are a courtesy, sort of built in bungie cords. The exception is the one that is holding the Mitsubishi labeled control module which I believe is for your electric shift controls.

I will say again that I love that charcoal gray of the '08 AE. That is a very good looking bike.

I rode to Grand Island NE over the weekend. 45-50°F on the way up. 50-55°F on the way back.

I love the fact that the cruise will set at 90mph. Most cars are limited to 80-85.

kieefjr wrote: Wed Mar 29, 2017 4:45 pm Beautiful weather today but since i worked the last 3 nights its pretty much wasted for a safe day to ride.

But I did swap out my shield from the clear-barn-door-winter shield to the stealth-black-cool-breeze shield.

BTW, some of you may have done this but I replaced the Allen screws, the first screws you remove to take the screen off, and replaced them with Phillips screws. (GenIII)
Just need one tool to remove now.
I must be getting old, I kinda missed that big shield.

Rode it. Its been in the high 40s to mid 50s. Pretty comfortable to ride around town in those temps with just my heavier jacket. Most of it is 30 min or less at a time between my clients and 65-85 on the freeway.

Since we are again experiencing sub-Arctic temperatures (57 F this morning!) I rode the FJR this morning and left the POS BMW parked. Love those heated grips on the FJR.

The best part about riding that BMW every day is that when I get on my FJR I really appreciate how wonderful it is. There really is no comparison, the FJR is almost too good to be true.

Of course after riding the BMW everywhere the last few days I had some issues with the Yamaha. Blew the horn 3 times this morning trying to work the turn signals.
