Friday - 5/16 Winnipeg to Thunder Bay ON, 700K, 8 hours, first 200K wet and windy, then 200K of nice WEAX, followed by 100K of wet before sunny skies as we approached Thunder Bay.

Image

Casualties - John's boots - feet still wet! I think the water is coming up my pant legs and wicking down my socks. It is supposed to be wet again tomorrow morning. I have some cling wrap that I will wrap around my boots and legs under my pants to seal out any water. May need longer pants in the future.

John's Tank Bag - my SW Motech tank bag has a quick release lanyard to pop it off the tank to fuel. That mechanism is prone to bind up if it gets dirty, it started to bind up yesterday and when I went to remove the bag this evening the lanyard parted leaving the bag stuck to the tank. We were successful in feeding a zip tie through the slot the lanyard previously occupied. The fix worked and a liberal dose of silicone spray to flush out the crap has restored the mechanism to operation.

Future plans - Tomorrow we ride to Sault St Marie along Lake Superior. We haven't decided where Sunday will take us.

The north side of Lake Superior is beautiful in decent weather and horrible when it turns cold, windy, rainy and foggy. I have done it several times in varying conditions. Last year, I hit +1°C between White River and Sault Ste Marie on August 20!
This was my early morning start from White River - just before dawn. (Not snow on the ground, but not far from it. I was mindful about the possibility of black ice in corners although I expect the pavement was too warm for it to form. Still, an unpleasant day!)

That is exactly what it is, thanks Jim.
I believe the water is wicking down via my too short pants and tall socks. I bought a roll of the plastic wrap used to wrap pallets, I've wrapped the boot - leg interface up halfway to my knee under my pants to see if that stops the problem.

I had the same problem with my SW-MOTECH WP Ctiy bag. Had to pull hard to release at gas stop on trip. Red lanyard came apart. 1/2 hour to get a zip tie in place to remove bag. PITA. Called SW-MOTECH after trip. They sent a replacement lanyard that was much more substantial.

Come to think of it, there are a lot of nice stops for rivers and waterfalls right off the highway, especially from Wawa South. Magpie falls in Wawa, Sand River falls in Superior Provincial Park, Chippewa falls just north Sault saint Marie.

I've got a buddy heading west, they've likely passed each other on the hwy. He just posted up from kenora that's it's at freezing and snowing. He's got family in Winnipeg so he's smelling the barn after a cup of coffee

It was a great ride today!
Started out in wind and drizzle for the first 150k, then just gray and gloomy with a few scattered showers.

As a famous Australian once told me "The road is the ride, and the ride is the road!"
We stop for gas, and a few pictures to be revealed at a later date.
The view from the Terry Fox overlook was outstanding.

Image

We had coffee at Timmy's just up the street from the damn goose, we got several pictures of the gooses ass from the road in the rain.

Overall the scenery was great, green trees, freshly leaved out birch and aspen, so many lakes and rivers. Canada should sell their water.

In Sault St Marie tonight. Once again rain and 42f predicted in the morning.

Boot experiment inconclusive but all signs point to too short pants allowing water into boot tops via socks and top closure. Plastic wrap as applied this morning didn't work. Will try over pant boot interface tomorrow, looking for a pair of waterproof gaiters but no luck this evening, maybe in Sudbury tomorrow.

Try Royal Distributing in Sudbury. They're a power sports store. I doubt they'd have gaiters though. Ramakkos is a well equipped outdoor store that probably has them.

I agree water is wicking up inside your pants, so meantime, try the saran wrap over your pantlegs.
