1: A guy on FJRForum makes a machined Union Bolt for the filter so the bike can accept convex filters. Easy and cheap. Hell, take that bolt out, take it to a machine shop and have them thin it down.

2: HAND TIGHT!! That's all your filter needs. Spin it until it makes contact and then go 1/4 turn. I've Never had a filter leak, and they usually come off pretty easily. I understand yours leaked because of the shape but a correctly shaped filter will not leak, using the method I just described.

3: Tinfoil is your friend. Wrap it around your lower fairing plastic, and shape it so it directs the oil to your pan. No more oil all over your plastic and in that foam, and no more wiping it off from all over the bike. Of course, changing a filter without draining the oil was bound to give you a bit of flow. However, the tinfoil would have saved you some grief.

But yeah, look at the old Micapeak site for easy maintenance things that are common to all Gens.

Tour of Honor scoring staff approved all of my pictures from the weekend so My pillion and I are officially the 3rd place trophy winners for the Mid-Atlantic region! Washed the bike last night after work and started prepping for SEO. We'll be leaving our area Thursday around lunchtime and have a route to visit 3 TOH memorials on the way to the hotel. Hope to see a bunch of you Thursday night!

I swapped the fake chrome side case "protectors" for the black rubber ones that came on all the Gen1 and Gen2 FJRs. This was purely a cosmetic thing and I felt a bit silly for doing it. I think the chrome protectors look great on the Gen3 bikes, especially the red '14s but on my Liquid Graphite the black seemed more appropriate.

Also, the chrome ones keep shedding the damned Yamaha sticker and that is not acceptable.

It is worth noting that the old style GLUES in place while the chrome has 3 tiny allen screws that poke through from inside the lid. Thanks to Garauld for his advice on which glue to use.

Rode it to work. Nothing fell off, so check-off ride went well. Wasn't sure if the bike would start after all the waxing. Pheewwww.

I just take the side and bottom off. It takes about 1 minute once you get used to it. I think I spent more than that trying to situate the tin foil and carefully get it out of there.

Well hell, you learn something new every day. Never thought about chucking up that bolt and machining it down a bit. I think my neighbor has a lathe. He has a Bridgeport and a sweet blue with wite racing stripes '67 fastback Mustang, so he probably has a lathe.

But, I have been using the Mobile 1 M118 (IIRC) filter. Used to use Purolator, but they changed it a couple years back. I am sure there are others that work well too.

Looks like he reduces the thickness to a little larger than half the original size. I looked, but he doesn't say how much material he removed.

Ordered a new wheel assembly for my Bushtec trailer. A flat or a bad bearing is a 10 minute job to repair.

Back when I was a zit faced asshole, as opposed to being a clear faced asshole, I bought a 69 Mach 1 fastback mit der 351 and louvres and shit for the princely sum of $1800. If I recall, it was around 76-77. I sold it a few months later after giving it a good cleaning for a couple of bucks more than I paid for it (I used to flip cars for cash).

Thats one of them I knew when I sold it I'd regret it.

Now here we are 40 years later, and I regret selling it.

I also had a REAL Challenger T/A, you know the ones with the 340 6-pack. 'Cept mine had an engine swap at some point with a regular 340 :/ I sold that one for $1200

My brother had a mint 70 390 AMX. I still have pics of that.

Your link is not working...

The machining is 0.06" off the face of the nut portion. Purolator (who make Bosch) alledgedly had replaced all stock quite some months ago, so maybe your local haunt didn't.... check before you leave. I've got plenty of filters so haven't gone filter shopping to verify the new stock is there. IF you're looking for alternates, see my oil filter cutaway thread, don't go with the new Supertech or the low line Fram. I am testing a mid-line Fram at the moment as it is more robust in design.

I chuckled a bit watching the quick removal/quick install of the filters..... no need for that, you'll leak what's out of the old filter no matter what. Only a few drops will leak out of the engine. I pull the fairing out and prop it out with a filter box or piece of wire, you won't get any oil on it. Leave it a bit and the oil running down the block will drain into your drain pan. Wipe clean, good to go.

I've always just propped the lower fairing with an Allen key and never had any mess. All the oil I was cleaning was from when the wrong filter was still on the bike and I was riding for some time as it was leaking.

Went in the grocery store yesterday, and left the key in the ignition with the switch on. No biggie; was only in there for 5 minutes, but it was long enough to realize the Big Banana Aerostich was disgustingly dirty .... so I washed it (the suit) once with detergent, then twice with Nikwax Tech Wash.

So, today rode it with a gleaming suit and -- I swear -- she handled better than ever.
