if tires are all that's needed to get you to tip toe us north over Roan Mtn, I'll order them tonight...

Your choice, but I would have just plugged the brand new m'effer and go.
But that's your choice. If you're fine with it, that's all that matters. If I still rode, I'd tell you to ship that thang south!

Packed my fjr this evening. Weather is nice down here this week. No point in sitting around. Not sure where I’m going or when I will return. Ain’t retirement grand?
Stay thirsty, my friends…

He said it was 6 inches. She said it was 2 inches. The measurement device solved the disagreement.
Yeah, I would've plugged that tiny hole and rode it to SEO without question. But then again, I'm cheap.

I bought a batch of the plug/patches to install from the inside of the tire just for this reason.

I'm a frugal b*stard with limited vacation time. If I want the extended weekend away from my wife and 11 year old, it has to be for something good. Sitting around a parking lot sweating and trying to replug a tire while everybody else is having fun is not my idea of a good time. I get you "every day is Saturday guys" would plug it and ride it. But my idea of a sweet motorcycle trip is riding my FJR at excessive speeds without worry if my tire is leaking. I would worry about that every time out. $220 I can afford. Missed day on the bike I cannot.
Replacement tire sent to Wayne and he's going to put it on for me. He is a good friend, didn't even beat me with the tire changing bar for not finding that nail until after the tire was remounted.

As a life long self-proclaimed "worrier", sometimes when you know it's gonna trigger your OCD, the piece of mind is worth it.

Much as we're going to bust your balls about it, safe beats sorry every time. Can't blame you for wanting to have one less item to worry about.

Not to worry. Rode a double plugged rear tire from Kali to Wheaton. Rode to redline in top gear on the loneliest highway. Have ridden all day in SE Ohio on a plugged rear tire, and gotten back to wheaton via elevated speeds on the crazy highways around Chicago during Sunday evening rush on said tire.
Have sticky string and compressor? Yer good to go. No worries.
If yer worried about tire punctures, that can happen on a brand new tire as you have demonstrated.
I have had a plug come out midturn on a mountain road in NorCal, it was no big deal because it was a rear tire. Yes, handling went to shit, but if I could get it to the side of the road, anyone can. That's why I had to double string it, the stupid reamer was too big, as I have repeatedly reminded Extrememarine.
Your money, your choices. However I have seen others successfully use sticky string with not one iota of safety issues. I have been on twisty roads and up at FJR nominal, with no concerns. Of course I check air pressure at stops, but have never lost air.
Caveats: not front tire (never had one of those), not in the sidewall (never had one of those), not a tear or elongated hole (never had one of those). Those I would not start a trip on. If it occurred during the trip, I would plug it if I could and get to a dealer.
Again, not denigrating your choice. But if Wayne did it I'd call him a pussy. JSNS.

D-eagle,
FWIW, four little words. TPMS.
I have a cheap(est) valve-cap system. Six years and counting, it works any time I add or release any air pressure.
To me, a TPMS is NOT optional equipment on the beefy FJR.

For the same reason this tire is being replaced, is the same reason I (rarely) leave the state on old tires.
Even if you put the additional cost of what a tire costs at a shop on the road, it's the lost time. Time still has significant value to me, and Don - since we're still punching a clock and every day is not Saturday. So I get it. And even more so, I appreciate the fact that we're not sitting on the side of the road somewhere between home and a destination trying to figure out how to get a bike towed because we can't plug it (I remember FJRPittsburgh showing up to tech day not long ago courtesy of a Harley rider's trailer - you can't always plug them...).
Well done, sir, well done.
**ball-buster-mode engaged**
I guess I'm rollin' on Michelin PR4GT's next...
Or was it that D-Eagle wanted to stick his finger in my jar of tire lube again...

'Took the cover off and put my new insurance slip in the compartment under the seat.

The issue with my tire in Ohio was a slice in the sidewall from a piece of metal on the road. The tire was fairly new at the time, but not plugable. The same thing could happen to Don with his brand new tire. A small hole in that 750 mile tire could've been easily plugged with no worry of losing air or shortening tire life.
So new replacement tire now and mount the repaired 750 mile tire later?

About 300 miles today with my good buddy Mike P. What a great ride around Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn. Zero traffic all day, railing it through the piney forest of East Texas.
Got a nice campsite at Boykin Springs. Cooked some pig and made a nice fire to sip the shampoo next to.
Life is good. Stay thirsty, my friends….

Told Wayne he can have it. He may get it properly repaired from the inside and then use it in the future. Or maybe save it as an emergency backup. I know since it's my tire the inch down the middle has 750 miles on it. Rest of the tread hasn't been touched.

I feel your pain. If I recall correctly, I had 50 miles on a set of new tires and found a nail in the rear tire. Sucks.
