Put both the FJR and the F700GS on a battery maintainer for a mid-winter top up. FJR hadn't been out since early December and the BMW was out in the middle of December. Each bike hit "green" on my one amp NOCO maintainer in less than a half hour. It would have taken in excess of 12 hours at a max 1A rate if the batteries were mostly flat. I needn't have bothered. Low parasitic draw and low self-discharge rate. I no longer bother to disconnect batteries on these bikes in the winter and only hook up the tender for a short time once or twice during the off season. Got 13 years and 160,000 km on the FJR’s OEM battery before changing it out last year due to low reserve capacity and elevated self- discharge...

No rides anticipated in the immediate future - more snow today and no major warmups in the near future, according to long-range forecasts.
This was exactly two years ago today - only time I have ever managed a February motorcycle ride in New Brunswick. (It was still too salty for the FJR).

Which is why I haven't messed with the dog bones on my 17ES.

Parts and fluids have arrived. Vader gets fresh fork juices, fuel igniters and tennis shoes this weekend...

Yeah, make sure you do a write-up on it!

New RS4 shoes on the FJR and went through Panman's trouble-causing 8983. Dry-ish day tomorrow so I'll be on bikes!

Shock is back on the bike, we found a deteriorating top out plate to be the culprit.





That red plate is some sort of Delrin or something with a little flexibility.

Found pieces of it every where!




Cleaned it well we thought and started put it back together, while stroking it to get the air out of the oil Mr. Shock Pro could tell that it still wasn't right so apart it came again.


This is what the shim stack's sit on and we thought we had cleaned it well but............



See that little hole, there are three and all three were tightly plugged with that red stuff. That's a lot of hydraulic pressure!



If you look you can see the stuff poking out on the inside of the big holes.

Only thing I can imagine is that white spacer has a lot of clearance and could actually cock on the shaft maybe cutting the red deal.

Roads are pretty wet this morning, think I'll go out and do some yard work and see what this afternoon looks like for a test ride.

Yesterday I got #15 back on the road. Bought it almost 3 years ago in non-running condition with a rusted fuel tank and inoperative fuel pump. An '09 with 40k miles and very clean other than the fuel tank issues. I didn't even want to buy it but that's a story for another day. It sat for almost two years as I worked through, and added to, my FJR projects. Got it running about a year ago and put 500 miles on it and since then it has sat. Well, I have some future plans for this girl so for the last several weeks I have been going completely through it. From transferring high-dollar custom suspension from another FJR, to lubing levers. And of course some proper farkling.

She looks good for a 16 year old FJR. Runs good too. Though after putting so many miles on Gen 3 and 4 FJRs the 'analog' experience of the older FJRs takes a little adjustment.

Scooter, I think you need an AE in your collection. Ya know, just so you have at least one of each.

Put the FJR on the center stand for maintenance. Spring is around the corner so it's time to get the center stand bolts turned around, swing arm cleaning and lube, and so on.

Edit: removed the left nut from the swing arm to prep for removal. Book says 85 ft/lb torque. It had maybe 20 to 30 ft/lb, and this was factory, I haven't touched it. Gad. Check your nuts folks.

I mean, normally I wouldn't turn down help - but maybe save cost of the air line ticket and wander over for SEO or EOM instead...

Did anybody else see what I see? though we had cleaned it well but....... and affiliated with the man known as ~G in the same post? What are the odds of every seeing something like this again!

Forks removed, taken apart and draining.

No bushings were molested today.
