What did you do to your FJR today?

Rode it to work...I really hate construction and school bus traffic. But it was still a glorious morning here on the north coast of Ohio.

Rode from Fredericton to Dartmouth last night after work (430 km or so). Bike seemed a bit off for handling the last couple hundred kilometers but I attributed it to me being tired. Got up this morning with the intention of doing a coastal ride down the NS south shore but the rear tire was completely flat - nail in tire. Spent the morning trying to find a shop that would fix it. No luck so I bought a sticky string kit. So far so good but I will give it a day before I go very far.


Was fortunate the nail didn't come out on the highway. I had aired it up to find the source and it rapidly deflated upon removal of the nail. Only 1200 km on Roadsmart III - less than 800 miles.

Ross, the sticky strings are the best IMHO (after trying some other techy plug kits). I have the same kit and a litte Slime compressor with an SAE plug on it to mate up with the Battery Tender harness. Ride it until it is worn out. A TPMS system would give you early warning and that has saved my butt a couple or three times. If you really want to go further with it, remove the plug and put a plug/patch kit from the inside, but a plain patch on the inside will work just fine too.
There are some good inexpensive TPMS systems out there too...... Rupse is good, Steelmate is good. Garmin sensors not so cheap. I'm about to try a cheap bluetooth/phone app one as well.

I have plugged my share of tires and generally ride them until they are done. I'm always a little nervous about the fix for a few hundred klicks. Prefer a patch from the inside but not an option today. I think it will be ok. See nail on label of patch kit.

Might do the TPMS. If that had fully deflated on the Trans Canada, it would have ruined my whole day.

I've seen bikes ridden hard and for a long time after a sticky string plug. I rode 136 miles straight of twisties in norcal, FJR nominal on the loneliest hwy, and 2000miles back to Wheaton...all on a Dbl plug in a PR2 Rear. May 2011.

EDIT: Today rode it to Duane's house. He's gonna take a peek at ABS...or just ride the shit out of it. I left him a full tank of gas.

Yup. RayZ rides like an old papere. I know this because i was able to keep his cop LED taillight in sight down some twisty backgrounds coming off the BRP.

Kinda like JWilly. But much more vertical.

Finished up my relay arm service and rear shock replacement last night but did't get to test ride it so that happened this morning. New rear shock has seat about 3/4 of an inch higher. Feels great, no more wallow in turns, takes bumps in road much better. Will post pics of the spacers from the old relay arm later. I might have the new record for the worst ones yet. Front most pivot point had no needles left in the bearing and was just dust. Wide spacer/bushing in arm is destroyed, loads of rust abd scarring from spent needle bearings.

I will be going through my original relay arm and rebuilding it to swap back in the next time it needs serviced. Won't be waiting another 125k miles I can tell you that!

If adequately lubricated and serviced on time, I would not expect the parts to actually wear out. The next time, you can probably just take the relay arm out, remove the collars, clean, regrease and slap it back together. A full set of parts to renew the relay arm is pricey and probably not needed unless you wait too long.

Yep, save yer money, those bearings and such ain't cheap. Now that you've got it greased it will last a whole lot longer, but ... what Ross said. Somebody mentioned getting on this job early in your FJR's life and grease it, then you'd be golden. Yes to that too.

Nothin' on the FJR but I did do the belt, sliders, oil/filter change, and air filters on my wife's Majesty. On top of that I also had to replace the fuel pump on the car...all while it was a 100F. Fun day...

Just finished a complete service on my cousins baby ninja. Valve adjustment, rear brake disc and pads, spark plugs, all fluids changed, everything lubed and adjusted to spec. Of course, after all that work I had to test ride it. I know they say “it’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast...”, but I’d rather ride my FJR.

Planning a trip to Philly with Ken the HD Guy so I rode a couple hrs in the rain to meet him for lunch and to discuss. Then I rode home in the rain. Darn good sammich, Holly Jo's Creekside Grill. Boone's Mill, VA.
