That was the old Wheaton. I showed up at the Ramble with a new set of tars. Art/Roadrunner wouldn't believe it. I would have loved to see the shock on his face.

So, since it is going to be a nice warm 92 today, I should work on the bike soon. Brake fluid, wash it, that kinda thing.
Ack. High temp here today is around 65F. Currently about 40F. Hey, the ice came off the lakes this week! Woohoo! It's officially bug season!

My manager Jim (He came down to the Ramble on his VFR1200 a few years back) is heading down to the Dragon for a week. I'm gonna meet up with him and ride down a ways for an hour or two. If anybody down that way is feels like playing tour guide I'm sure he'd love it. He is NOT a fast rider.

So. Do you like your manager? I hear he doesn't give you much time off. You didn't give the week he was going down.

If it's during the week, no can do. If it's on the weekend, no way I'm going near that Harley/Miata clusterfuck...too many other better roads to ride. I go there on Thanksgiving when I have it to myself and don't slow down for nobody.

If it's on a weekend day we don't have anything booked, and he wants to do other roads, I'd be willing to lead him astray for a couple hours. Again, do you like this manager or not? Kind of important to determine how much gravel to run. :D

Silverback - that looks like a "nice week in Arkansas" tire. You got the edges pretty hot. Man, that Arky pavement eats tires....

At the start of May I brought my bike in for a valve check, and a hydraulic fluid flush. After a $100 in parts (4 spark plugs at $5ea, air filter ($50) cuz the mice got into mine, and a gallon of genuine Yamaha anti freeze spooge ($30!) I was handed a bill for... Let's just say my ass still hurts. I complained loudly to the owner of the shop who promised to investigate why a valve check, by a factory trained, 'master mechanic', billed 7 hours on a 4hr job (book time, with no adjustments).

This morning I let the bike warm up to go for a ride with my manager and the bike is pissing liquid gold anti freeze.

f@$k

long story short, the factory trained masterBator failed to not only tighten the screw clamp between the coolant rail and the rubber hose. Said fuckBag didn't even connect it all the way.

I'll be returning to the dealer to extract vengence.

In the meantime, here is the Sudbury tech day festivities.

Man that sucks Bungie.

A good shop is hard to find and when you do, they are worth the money for the time saved, especially if you don't have space and skills.

You obviously have the skill which makes the ineptitude sting even worse. Paid incompetence is one of those things that really gets under my skin.

Hopefully they make it right with you.

It HAD to be that connection, the least accessible of them all. Not having a garage, the thought of doing a valve check, outside, at 2c or 3c isn't in the cards for me. But this kind of shit...

Do you have a clue the rage I'd let loose if this had happened in Ohio?! I'd be banned from the state!

Hmmmm....the new PR5! Please post up your impressions of this one when you get a few miles on it. I'd be curious on the endurance and handling characteristics of this one vs. the PR4GT.

Nothing more frustrating than paying professional wages and getting substandard work. I wonder if Yamaha might be interesting in knowing that their dealer is giving their brand a black eye. Does Canada have a Better Business Bureau?

About that hose clamp..... whenever I do a valve check, I flip/turn that thing around so you can get at it next time from the rear side. I can't let anybody work on my bike either... it will never see a dealer.

... and this is the reason I"m so pissed. Said dealer sells more FJR"s than any dealer in Canada, both the dealer principal and his wife both ride FJR's. In the past, he was instrumental in liasing between Yammie Canada and myself over my long out of warranty ticking 04. I previously held these guys in high regard. I understand that stuff gets overlooked, hell guilty as shit myself. But I'm not charging $120 per hour for 'factory trained master mechanics', at that rate I expect f@$king perfection.

See, Ray knows of the clamp I speak. You can see the end of a pry bar in the close up photo pushing the wire loom out of the way just make it visible. You can also see in the picture, that he sealing 'rib' on the metal tube is still visible on the hose. The hose clamp has to go PAST that.

Even a backyard mechanic parts changer like me knows that any time you open a coolant system, after it's buttoned back up, you start the engine, bring it to operating temp, and then check for leaks. This is just inexcusable and quite frankly brings into questions whether you should trust anything they have done? Did they give you a sheet with the valve clearance numbers for each valve?

Haha. Oh no, I won't be doing that. I want my bill adjusted and acknowledgement that their masterBator needs his peepee slapped. Letting loose the hell of 57 Winters. No I wouldn't do that for this lol!

It's easier to use a pressure tester. Once it's hot, it's less comfortable to fix that one thing you missed.

I'm still unsure why there is a fascination with adjusting valves. Since they started using hardened seats, there really isn't a reason to adjust them. Especially if they aren't causing a heat soak miss. Personally, on a modern engine, I'd rather leave it alone unless something requires maintenance.

Yeah, well what if your piston hit a valve? It would be kinda foolish to ignore that consequence, right?

That would never happen due to valve wear. Valve seats wear (very slowly now that they are hardened) and when the valves heat up, cause them to only partially seal. Then you get a miss after heat soak because there isnt any compression. Valve to piston clearance does not get smaller due to wear. In order for that to happen, the valve stem would have to have material added over the life of the engine.

Valves hit pistons because of float (high frequency resonance in springs which was cured by progressive wound valve springs) or out of time condition.

There's nothing wrong with adjusting valve lash if you want to, it's just not necessary in a modern engine.
