Retired guys piss me off.
Here to piss you off some more Uncle Hud. It was a great day. I road SW Washington in the farm country south of Olympia today. Last night I whipped out my motorcycle state highway guide Destination Highways Washington and created and laid down a route a bit different than what I usually do. It was a complex little route - glad I had the GPS. It was a big loop with a very little loop inside designed to hit all the good roads in the farm country. The road names are mostly based on historic names such as Michigan Hill Road, Independence Road, Bunker Creek and Lincoln Creek.

Temps today reached the mid 50's. Not bad for Washington State this time of year. Road conditions were double yellow lines with white stripes on the left, poor sight lines (these are country roads) with a bit of gravel courtesy of sanding operations. In other words damn near perfect.

I stopped in Adna Washington and had a hotdog today. Looks to be the little store is on hard times with gas pumps closed and some shelves in the store empty - that made me sad.

Here is a older photo of store at Adna. The porta poty was move to the opposite side of the building so nobody will confuse it with the Post Office and the building was recently painted.

Image

I was here today but this is a fall picture and today the trees were just starting to bud - spring is here.

I was also at the Alpaca farm. Photo for Bust above.

My goodness what an amazing day to ride to work. 41F at home when I left, 55F in town under the heat bubble. 70F on the way home with the sun shining. Beautiful.

Sadly though, I also witnessed a last ride today. An orange sportbike pulled out of the park just ahead of me after dropping my kid off for soccer practice. At the light he went left and I went right. I heard sirens a short time later and the news confirms that about 100 yards after making the turn he was hit by a left turn driver and was killed. Sad.

I rode my FJR to work today in frigid 40F weather, but that's not the point of this post.

At a stoplight, I pulled up beside a young man on a Suzuki dirtbike that had full-on street tires for city riding. That was interesting, but still -- not the point of this post. He was hunched over, his helmet touching the right handlebar grip. His hand hung down, almost touching the engine or maybe the exhaust pipe. When he heard me chuckling, he looked up and pointed to his woven cotton gloves.

"Couldn't find my real ones this morning! This is how I'm keeping warm!""

Yep, I remember commuting on my FZ1 with no heated gear and no heated grips. Stop lights in the winter were welcome as they gave you time to reach down and hang onto the engine block and try to get feeling back in your hands.

Just street tires or a supermoto?

I miss my Gen 1 for this. Thier was a 1/2" gap between the frame rail and the gas tank. Jambing your fingers in there was a fast way to warm your digits up. Oddly, I never found the 04 hot unless it was REALLY hot out. In which case, any bike would've felt hot.

Size of the wheels. Supermoto will have 17" wheels. There are folks who spoon on some odd street tires onto their dirt wheels just for tooling around, trying it out, or because they haven't ponied up the $$$ for a set of supermoto wheel conversions.

On another note. It's beautiful and I'm working from home and my wife just texted me that she left something at home that could I please run up to her work that is close by. Of course I didn't hesitate and I rode the FJR over there instead of driving. :D

After looking at pictures, the bike was likely a DRZ 650. It definitely had full-on street tires. Fat front with a round cross section like you'd see on a Harley; no tread "blocks" like dirt tires or enduro tires or trials tires. Like this:

Yeah. Beautiful day here, too, despite the chill. It's already warming nicely, and it's comfy wearing the 'Stich in this weather.

DR650 or DRZ? The DRZ400 does come as a supermoto from the factory as an option, I've owned two of them. Super duper fun. That said, some folks have converted over DR650's as well. Everyone should ride a supermoto at least once in their life.

PA weather at least where I live is nuts! It started snowing Wednesday morning around 3 or 4 and by the time I went to work we had several inches. It continued on and off all day and into the night. Thursday morning we had probably 10-12 inches at my house and I figured that was it, the streak would be over. I had to shovel out the end of my driveway just to get my truck out this morning after the plow went through. Half our shop called in the past 2 days because of the snow. Some areas saw more than 16 inches! Around 8 or 9 am the sun starting getting really bright and warm and by luch time our plowed parking lot was actually dry. I began to have hope I could get my miles in.

Haircut appointment after work and I noted on the way there and back that the roads were pretty much all completely clear and dry. Success in mine! Fresh back from 16 miles and a fuel stop. Day 368!!! Keeping the dream alive!

Took her in today, after work, to get her first service. Of course, this is riding season here in Flatistan, and with riding with my daughter, in preparation for our trip, I had slightly more than 600 miles. 2,000 to be approximate.

I just couldn't take her in, when I'm having soooo much fun, and high in the 60-70's!

Rode it to work, and by that I mean the FJR and I checked a couple of malfunctioning traffic signals in downtown Atlanta. This one's near the Tabernacle concert venue; Luckie Street at Ted Turner.
