Mr. and Mrs. Pants Canadian Adventure, Summer 2025

Post by Hppants »

Bonjour les Ami!

Pants checking in from Quebec, Canada, home sweet home for the next 4 months! Feel free to drop in on this thread to see how things are going!

How we got here is an interesting story.

If you recall, last summer we were in New Hampshire and we throughly enjoyed New England. During that time, we briefly explored Maine and Vermont and enjoyed that. Also, our son lives in Brooklyn, and he visited us 4 times last year, which we REALLy enjoyed. So for this summer, we thought that maybe Maine or Vermonth might work. Wrong - the ABBs in these areas were entirely too expensive, well outside of our budget.

So I was sharing my dilemma with a Canadian M/C buddy, and he asked me if I thought about Canada? Well... no, but you have my attention. One thing led to another, and Quebec started looking real interesting. There is plenty fo Pants to do (outdoor stuff - motorcycle, bicycle, hiking, kayak, etc), and the city of Quebec City looks to be a hoot for us to enjoy. Tammy and the kids all speak French fluently, so that certainly helped sell Quebec. Finally, with the money exchange, the ABBs were well within our budget.

And so, we booked it.

Different from last year is that this year, we are leaving for four months (3 last year). It's just getting too hot in June for us to stay home. Also different is that we have booked two seperate places to stay. For the next 10 weeks, we will be in a area 15 minutes north of Quebec City. Then at the end of August, we pack up and move 2 hours south to an area generally referred to as Magog. That area is more rural and wooded, and we hope to enjoy the same fall foliage colors there as we did last year in New England. We will be there for 7 weeks before heading home October 10.

It took us the better part of a week to pack up.

Image

This is our 4th summer doing this. We have a very extensive spreadsheet that helps us remember what to bring, what to do to shut down our home, etc.

Image

I bought new tires for the trailer this year. The old ones had plenty of tread left, and no signs of dry cracking, but they were 6 years old, and I didn't want to worry about it.

Image

And so on June 10, the Cajun Hillbillies set out for adventure. Over the next 5 days and 2200 miles, we would see much of the eastern side of this country. I really enjoyed that show.

I imposed on friends to host us along the way. I'm always concerned about the security of my toys kept in an open trailer at a hotel parking lot. As expected, our friends accepted the imposition in spades.

First stop was Turk (Fjrbandit) and Jana's in Alabama. They have a new addition to the family (Hazel) - she's a real cutie!

Image

We had grilled steaks and fixings, and they were delicious. My steak must have been well over a pound, and I'm ashamed to admit that I ate the WHOLE thing!

Day 2 brought us to Jim (Spklbuk) in Crawley, WV. This was our longest (mileage and timewise) day of the trip, and by the time we got to Jim's, we were whopped!

Image

I throughly enjoyed waling Jim's property with him, particularly his garden. Almost Heaven, indeed!

Image

Ms. Reese sure took a liking to Ms. Tammy!

Image

Jim cooked some chicken and fresh from the garden brocolli for us and also cooked an interesting Tunisian breakfast dish as well.

Day 3 took us to Joyce and Eric's (not forum related) in the Philly area. Joyce prepared a wonderful assortment of "finger foods", and they invited a few of their friends to join us for a driveway party. We had a great time, but sadly, I took no pictures.

Day 4 brought us to a suburb of Boston. Although this was the shortest day distance wise, it was all day due to the heavier traffic in the big cities. I had to trick Google Maps into navigating me to select cities along the way, in order to avoid Washington DC, NYC, etc. At one point, as we changed roads, an electronic sign appeared saying "Low Bridge Ahead, all trucks MUST exit". When I didn't exit, Tammy asked me why, stating that "we have a truck". I told her that wouldn't apply to light duty pickup trucks. But then I got to thinking - the sign didn't say anything about the height clearance. What if I'm wrong? I pulled off at the exit (last chance) and found a place to stop. Then I asked Google "how high is the XXXXXX low bridge"? 6 feet, 11 inches! Holy crap - that would have been disasterous! The tops of our kayaks are over 8 feet high! We routed around the low clearance and in 15 minutes, we were on our way. Serena and Dan were happy to see us, and we went out to a local mexican grill restaurant, followed by a nice sampling of Serena's fine scotch whiskies at their home. This one was my favorite. I looked up the price - I won't be buying any of this any time soon!

Image

Day 5 got us out early, as we were excited to get to our destination. The weather was perfect and we arrived at the border crossing about noon. The entry process took about 2 minutes, and we got across without any issue.

I set my instrument panel to metric. This is going to take some getting used to. I told Tammy that it didn't feel like I was going a hundred! She freaked out for a second - lol.

Image

Three hours later, about 3 pm, we arrived at our ABB. It far and away exceeded all of our hopes and expectations. This is a very nice place located on a small private lake. We are extremely comfortable here.

Image

I got the trailer and the truck unloaded yesterday, and we unpacked just enough to deal with what we really needed on morning (COFFEE!!!). The rest will take care of itself over the next day or so.

Last night we ate dinner at a good local restaurant. Tammy likes to try those Tootie Fruity drinks with a lot of words in the description. I'm more of a "local IPA" dude:

Image

We bought groceries and called it a night. To be sure, it was 5 days on the road in a loaded truck pulling a trailer. Not exactly "relaxing", but we were not nearly as worn out as last year, although the trip was 1 day and 300 miles longer. Maybe we are getting used to it.

Our kids, along with our son's boyfriend and the dog, arrive in a week or so. Until then, Tammy and I will try to manage.

I love these hybrid kind of trips. One day you are with family, one day in a kayak, one day on the MC. Sometimes a combination of some or all. Some of my favorite trips have been like that.

Mr. and Mrs. Pants know how to live! My wife is a homebody and prefers Spokane winters at home to Tucson and Scottsdale.

I suggested San Diego for a bit then a Mexico cruise. She liked that idea.

Enjoy being away from the sauna.

Edited to add: The first step is admitting you have a problem. At least I'm humble enough for that. Literarily speaking, I'm about as dumb as a bag of rocks. But there is abundant empirical data that leads me to believe how much my wife likes words. Not the least of this is the fact that more times than not, when she talks to me, I have to say, and I quote.... "huh?" or "WTF does that mean?". You know - intelligent questions like that. Also, nearly every day, we do the daily crossword together. Well - she answers the clues and I just type it in the laptop. Finally, and IMNSHO most impressively, at the restaurant/bar/vending stand/whatever, you can bet your arse and even win a friendly wager with a bystander by predicting precisely which menu item Tammy is going to order.

Whichever one has the most words in it.

6/16/25

Toiday is our first full day in Canada, and what a great day it is! First, I can already tell it's going to be a LONG day. I woke up at 5:00 am sharp to FULL light in the bedroom. I suppose we will use the blinds tonight. Last night it didn't get totally dark until about 9:45 pm. Crazy.

52 Deg. F this morning and bone dry. It sure was nice to drink my own coffee and relax by the picture window in our dining area. The view of the lake is mesmerizing. A large bird flew by and lit on a branch across the lake. I scurried for my binoculars, but was too late to see what it was. Those are now sitting on the porch table, ready at the wait.

We spent an hour or so unpacking boxes. We got the kitchen set up nicely and I got the garage set up so I can tend to my toys down there.

We also took care of some "business". I bought us a "month by month" Amazon Prime account for use in Canada. I knew about this - before we left, I called Amazon and got informed. Without asking, the Amazon rep credited my US account for MORE than enough money to pay for our Canadian membership. Score. We also took care of some other business and banking matters and by late morning, I can wait no more. I grabbed a fishing pole and walked across the driveway. Our host told me to try live worms, so last night I bought a box of worms at the gas station. This will work.

Image

Tammy walked down to sit by the dock and watch. It's like the entire world is air conditioned.

Image

No luck after an hour or so, so we walked back up to the house and had lunch on the patio.

After lunch, I decided to take a bicycle ride. I wanted to wear my brand new jersey I bought for the occassion, but Pants is a dumbass and ordered one size too small. Oh well - the old jersey will have to do.

Image

This entire region is extremely bike friendly. Dedicated bike paths to use, and when you come upon a motorists, regardless of the circumstances, they yield to you. This is unfamiliar to me.

Image

Now this is yard art!!

Image

There are hills here! It didn't take long for my legs to start burning. I am concerned that I don't have enough gear (or legs/lungs) for the road bike here, but there's only one way to find out.

I did ok - back home I would have to ride over 200 MILES to gain this much elevation!

Image

I decided to cut the ride a bit short so that my legs can acclimate. There will be plenty of time to explore that more. I did find two mountain bike trails close to our ABB - I'm excited to try that.

Back at the ABB, very sweaty, I figured I might as well wash the 2200 miles off my truck. Before we left, among MANY other things, we asked our host if a wash station was possible. She had a garden hose bib installed and all set up for me. Very nice.

I noticed Tammy was kind of quiet - maybe even more than usual. Finally, I asked her what was wrong. "Nothing", she replied. Normally, I would just let it go. After 38 years, Pants has learned to pick up clues. This was different, so I pushed gently. She relented and I learned that earlier in the day, Tammy broke a tooth. Shoot. I took a look and it's significant - 1/4 of a molar is gone. Thankfully, she has no pain with it. We reached out to our host for a dentist reccomenedation.

We decided to take a walk around the lake. The flowers in our yard are so pretty.

Image

If you notice the lack of enthusiam in Tammy's smile, you are quite observant. I stopped and paused the walk.

(Pants) "Mama, I can see you are worried about your tooth."

(Tammy) "yes"

(Pants) "Now Mamma, we've gone through this. It's just another part of the adventure. The important thing is that you are not hurting. People break teeth in Canada. We are gonna get this fixed. If you stay home and do nothing, then nothing will happen. Now don't worry - let's enjoy the walk."

(Tammy) "Ok - thanks"

Now, let's see what we can see. Huh - this looks interesting.

Image

It's just wonderful.

Image

Image

In the evening, I was seeing more activity on the water, fish wise. Maybe that's the trick - I'll try that soon.

After we got back to the house, we face-timed our children. They are coming up next weekend and we couldn't wait to tell them all about the place. Our son excused himself when Tammy walked around the house. He wants to see it raw and be surprised. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Our children are very excited to come up and so are we.

I picked up a party pack of IPAs at the grocery yesterday. This one is brewed in Montreal. It's a very nice unfiltered summer beer.

Image

I cooked a simple meal (hot dogs and a salad) and we watched a movie.

Tomorrow is another day.

Stay thirsty, my friends....

Do you know what that is? It's a warning. A warning to all visitors from south of the Mason Dixon line that you need to get the absolute hell out of there before the first snow. THAT is what that thing is.

+1. That a a good one Jasen.

Google search says it is a Honda FourTrax Foreman 4x4 ATV with aftermarket track systems installed. These tracks replace the standard tires and are designed to provide enhanced traction and flotation in challenging conditions like snow, mud, and sand.

Guys buy those, put a plow on it, then put the tracks on when they realize even mud tires aren't good enough.

6/17/25

Another terrific sunny day!

Our host gave us a dentist suggestion and Tammy called them first thing in the morning. She got an appt for 2 weeks from now, and with no pain, hopefully that will be just fine. She seemed more comfortable with that plan. With that taken care of, my day just got free!!

Let's ride!!

I picked the FJR to ride today, and left the ABB about 10:00 am, with temps right at 65 degrees. I gased up in Lac-Beauport at a pricey $1.53 CAD per liter (about $4.15 USD a gallon!). What octane is considered "ordinarie"? Hopefully it's 87, 'cause that's what I bought.

I hit the highway heading north. The speed limits here are a bit slower than comparable roads in the States. Most people run at least 10 Km/hr over the limit. I have yet to see a Canadian Police officer since we left the border.

This is a nice arch bow bridge.

Image

About 20 minutes later, I exited and entered the Jacques Cartier National Park. Mssr. Cartier was the frenchman who "discovred" what we now know as Canada. He sailed up the St. Laurance River and stopped at what is now Quebec City.

The entrance attendant sold me a day pass for $10 CAD, but told me that I could buy an annual pass at the Visitor's Center. The 10 km ride into the park is magnificent!

Image

The main road just follows the Jacque Cartier River, which has been working on this Canyon for tens of thousands of millenia.

Image

I get to the visitors center, and walk in with a bit of trepidation. All I hear is french speaking, and I don't know much french. When my turn was called, I was very relieved to find out that the attendent speaks very good english. She sold me a National Parks annual pass for all of Quebec for $45 USD. That's extremely inexpensive. I then got a bunch of information to bookmark for future visits.

But for today, I'm just going to ride the main road and get the feel of the park.

Image

I ran up a few kilometers and stopped at this picnic area to have my lunch.

Image

There are lots of bugs flying around, but none of them are landing on me, let alone biting me. It doesn't bother me at all.

I get to the end of the paved part of the road and stopped. The upstream view looks swift.

Image

The downstream view? Not so much.

Image

From here, there are 35 kilometers of gravel road to explore later on the Bush Pig.

I met a young couple at this location coming out of a hiking trail. The gentleman was signaling how warm it was (maybe 75 deg. F) and I had to chuckle at him. Back home, we'd call these temperatures "Autumn". He and his wife speak English and we had a nice 10 minute conversation. Everyone here is SO nice. Any reservation what so ever I had about being welcomed here was completely unfounded. Phil and I exchanged phone numbers and as a side note, this morning, I received text messages wit an extensive list of things to do in Quebec while were are here. Some of the list we knew about, but much we did not. It's always so helpful to have local knowledge.

Earlier at the Visitor's Center, I saw something that caught my eye. A stop on the return ride was certainly called for!

Image

I rode back out of the park, and then took a 2-lane road back toward our ABB. As I was riding, I noted a road on the GPS that looked curvier, and so I detoured a little and explored some more. It was more fun to ride, but I ended up a bit farther south than I wanted, and had to deal with a little bit of Quebec City suburb traffic. Oh well - I'm learning.

Back at the ABB, the day is still long, and Tammy was up for something else.

I dragged the kayaks across the driveway and down to the lake shore. Our dock is "semi-floating", meaning that the shore side of the dock is fixed, but the lake side is on floats, and moves up and down when weighted. We tried to use it as a kayak launch and it worked beautifully for Tammy. She got in the boat on the dock, and then I walked toward the end of the dock, sinking it just enough to put an inch or so of water under her. Then I just gently pushed her into the water.

For me, not so good. I got into the kayak on the dock, but with me alone, it wasn't enough weight to sink the dock. So I "scooched" myself to the end of the dock and .... PLOP!! The jump was a bit much, and I flipped over into the drink!! That water was quite chilly. I pulled everything back out of the water and emptied my kayak. Then I just entered the water at the shore and got in that way.

No harm, no foul!

Image

How nice is it to have this place literally in our front yard!!

Image

Image

Tammy loves the kayak.

Image

Image

We paddled around the entire lake (an hour or so) and then returned to our dock. I got out the same way I got in - just stood into the shallow water and pulled my own boat on the dock. Then I walked to the end of the dock and Tammy paddled right on on to it. It was very easy for her to get out of the boat from there.

Last summer, I paid $200.00 for gym membership privledges and I don't think I got my money's worth. So this year, I just loaded some free weights and a couple of dumb bells in my truck and brought them with me. I checked F/B Marketplace and scored a simple workout bench from a lady not 10 minutes from our ABB. Only $20 CAD!!! It was missing a couple of bolts, so Tammy and I stopped at the hardware store for that. I don't have a metric tape measure, so it was a little tricky converting to what was available, but I guessed right. I'm all set up in the garage now.

I'm still getting my bio-rhythem in check here. By the time the sun sets enough for me to call it quits for the day, it's 8:30 or later! By that time, I don't feel much like cooking. So last night I just made us some BLTs and we called it dinner.

Rain forecast for tomorrow, so we are probably just going to hang out at the ABB.

Pant's ain't afraid of that. It is merely a Frostback version of the Cajun swampbuggy.

As we have all stated or witnessed/read firsthand, Pants can write about anything. This adventure is no different for sure.

Keep it coming my brother!

I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!

Pants, you'll be OK at 10 mph over..... so 100 kph = 62 mph. I think your FJR should be able to change units to kph.... keep it under 20 kph over.

He's plenty afraid of snow. Remember last year how he was sweating it trying to get out of NH before the first snow? He definitely don't want Canadian snow!

That's true, but I'm learning. The great Cajun Blizzard of 2025 gave me some pointers.
