Gas Cap Fun
Finally got caught up to do some maintenance. Went to clean the tank out and the key won't come out of the tank. Took apart the cap and extracted the key. Cleaned up and no joy. Tried another key, same thing. Lock mechanism proper appears to be fine, something not resetting. Polished part edges slightly with 1000 grit paper. Ideas??

Re: Gas Cap Fun
I hate keyed gascaps and unkey mine, but if you want you could also use this to completely disassemble and loosen then lube your pins inside the lock:

It's interesting, BMW guys bitch constantly about the electronic Keyless ride that unlocks the gas cap electronically, and wish it was key operated. I've never had an issue, but I'm sure it sucks when it doesn't unlock. You have to take out 2 torx screws to get it open. But, I never thought about a key getting stuck in the cap. You're pretty much screwed as you can't start the bike, unless you carry a second key. Probably a good idea to carry one.

I spent most of my money on guns, motorcycles, women, and whiskey. The rest I just wasted!

The first motorcycle gas cap I had to drill out left me REALLY questioning the value of locking gas caps, the second one left no more questions, I was done with them.Toter wrote: ↑Sun May 04, 2025 3:52 pm It's interesting, BMW guys bitch constantly about the electronic Keyless ride that unlocks the gas cap electronically, and wish it was key operated. Re: Gas Cap Fun
I narrowed the head of a key with a grinder, glued a replacement radio knob onto the stub, and left the key in the lock of my Wing. Looked factory, easily removed when more security is wanted.
