Pricing a (very) used FJR

KBB is out the window. If you were tasked with selling a well maintained, fully farkled, one owner, 2018 FJR1300 with 100,000 miles on the clock, where would you start?

Always tough...... My usual...... make a little spreadsheet list..... check the prices of bikes from your usual "For Sale" sites like CL, Cycle Trader, etc. of models a couple or three model years either side of '18. Check past/current listings on FJR forums.... pick a number of what the average '18 might be, then price slightly lower to be more attractive than the next guy. For high miles, drop a wee bit more. Draft up an ad, it will be more attractive with a maintenance history, fluid changes up to date, valve check info, tire condition, etc.

Someone told me years ago that insurance companies use NADA to establish values for claims. I always check that as I always found KBB to be higher so sellers want to use that. Just my 2 cents.

Bottom line (pun intended) - the used bike seller's market is as strong as its been. But 90% of the buyers will shy away from your bike (and mine), unless you give it away. And if you offer it for "give away" price, then 60-70% will still shy away from it. So YOUR (and my) buyer's market is very limited.

(Warning - the next 2 sentences are going to spark controversy. I come in peace, and you are getting the advice you are paying for.

Ask $7,995.00. If you get a legitimate offer for $7,300.00 or more, I'd jump on it.

This is why i'm re-thinking selling mine. A net loss of $14K or more on a new one is a lot for what I might get.

I’m thinking of buying a 22 and keeping this one until the bags arrive for the 22. Maybe list it in the mean time. Who knows. Last time I got this far, I waited too long and stock vaporized.

You could ask a couple of dealers what they'll give you on trade..... what my local dealer told me...... need to make $2000 on a used bike, will offer you what they think it will sell for minus that. Will credit you for only the desirable farkles (e.g., crash bars, aftermarket seat or suspension, top box) at 25-30% of what they originally cost...... The only thing you're doing with this number is to establish some number in your head for a private sale.

One possible conclusion is you may decide to keep the bike and wear it out, sell it cheap then... but the cost of ownership per year is much less... when it comes to the next bike, me personally, I'll buy a used one all day long that someone else has taken the initial hit on. The newest bike I bought was my '14, after it sat 2 years in the showroom.

I’ve always received better than blue book on my used bikes, despite their mileage. Those days appear to be over for the foreseeable future. Dealers around here won’t touch a high mileage bike at any price now. So it’d be a private sale, which I have historically, been able to avoid. The only sure thing is that it will be interesting.

My 13 was listed from April 2021 to Oct 2021 for 9k (deduct 30% for U S). In that time i had exactly one person interested.

To say that the used bike market is on life support is an understatement.

In relisted my bike 2 weeks ago. I've had 2 inquiries. One random guy, another is known to a few of us here.

Keep it and ride the wheels off it. It's just broken in.

Sad reality is that while all of us know 100k on this platform is no big deal there are still far too many riders who have never seen that sort of mileage on ANY bike and won't pay more than scrap value for one. At that point keeping it becomes a better deal.

This doesn’t help Bill Lumberg, but in July of 2015, about 9 months after I got a great deal on a 2013(RIP), I gifted my son David my 2004 with 90xxx miles on it riding it up to him before his wedding up north.

His problem was letting it sit too long as he was busy with work and night school and newly married. He recently fixed that and loves the bike. He plans on riding it more…or I’m taking it back lol.

Yep. At some point, how much is it worth to have as a spare vs a few thousand in cash. If I buy another, I’ll will list it in perpetuity and use it for sweet jumps in the meantime. Posting pics of big air=sure to increase market value.

Keep it...put aggressive offroad tires on it...use it for dual sporting.

Or the IBR on street/car tires.

Or sell it and get some awesome handwarmers and a Bud Light.

Agree most people will shy away from a high mileage bike. You're more likely to get a bite from someone on this site that is educated in how far these bikes go and wants the perks of cruise. Better yet if somebody knows you and how well you take care of your bike. Good luck.

My 2009 is worth more in the garage (and on the road) than I'd ever get for it on the open market or on trade. Ohlins front and rear, seat, Givi top box, audiovox CC, Euro foot guards, Heli top clamp, etc. None of that would make a meaningful impact on the sell price. It will end up with a new dirt oriented sibling next to it soon.

Dealer said to me the average bike gets 1300 miles a year. Mileage is a huge problem when selling a used bike. Average bike buyer will not consider a bike with the miles we put on FJRs. I had a Honda VT1300 cruiser. KBB says 6k list 4k trade with "normal" miles on it.
Dealers didn't want it cause it had 66k on it. Offered me 2k in trade.Nope.
Kept it for awhile as a spare. My son still liked to ride it. Then we were moving and it needed to go. Five bikes are just too many to move with. Finally sold it for 3.8k. Felt like I got lucky to find a buyer that would pay that.
Funny thing. I would have taken that bike on a long trip with no problems. It has miles left. The average rider would still get years out of that bike.
I listened to a salesman telling a guy to never buy a bike with over 25k on it.

I thought about selling my '12 a few years ago to get a new one and decided not to do it for a reason I can't remember now. I told a few friends I'm riding it to Yosemite next year, they asked how many miles are on it, 75k and they asked do you trust it with that many miles on it!?!? Yes I do, completely.

Knowing I can't get much for it at this point I'll get a S10 to keep it company in a couple years.
