You can get more detail on Garmin GPS by using OpenStreetMap in place of Garmin's map. OpenStreetMap has more off road stuff like trails so better for dual sport but they also show more detail at given zoom levels so I preferred them for street use as well. Disclosure: I now use Android 7" tablet or smartphone for GPS.

Which one? The world has about abandoned the 7" form factor for the most part.

This is a whole new thread, so I will wait until later. But I so need to learn how to use OSM and download all the GPX to my zumo. I guess I need a "OSM for dummies" book.
I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!

I went down this hole a couple years ago. Here's what I posted on the Two Wheeled Texans thread.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are doing US I found this guy's video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDYtbo45YgE

Which led me to this site.

http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/usa-osm-topo-routable

Which has larger regions as maps. They are huge. There's an auto experimental version of the entire US, but not sure how good that is.

On windows it's pretty easy.
1. Download 7zip and install as it's the zip format used.
2. Extract files
3. Run the installer bat file that creates the symlinks from Garmin to the extract location.
4. In BaseCamp just select the new OSM map from the maps option in the menu bar.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thread -> https://www.twtex.com/forums/threads/bu ... ap.117172/#

The thread has been updated since my find, but those are what I used to get Open Street Maps on my super cheap to me GPSmap 60CSx.

The Galaxy Tab A 7" and 8" are on Amazon and Ebay. They have good GPS response and screen brightness for outdoor use. Samsung discontinued the 7" but there always seems to be plenty of them available.

Supposed to rain for the next few days. Piss on it. Took it for a ride. I haven't washed it this year, so, after the ride, it got a bath.

I rode to Owen Sound yesterday and home today. I hope you took backroads, it took me 2 hours to get to the 400 via 26. Meaford, Thornbury, Collingwood and Wasaga were shitshows

I took bridges over the 400 series. Only Collingwood had traffic. Just flat out fun for the most part.

I went for 350 miles today in perfect temps and perfect roads, following Duane/1911.

I am perfectly beat, but perfectly happy.

Picked up a set of MCL peg lowering blocks off the other forum. Installed them today, along with a new clutch lever bushing. Cleaned all the old dirt and grease out and used Mobil 1 grease. Wow, amazing how smooth the clutch actuation and shifting are. Took about a 2 hour ride. The lowering blocks are absolute money! Very comfortable for cruising. I can now get on the balls of my feet for the twisties. Couldn't do this before as the knees were fully compressed. Nice change with the recent knee replacement. Very rewarding changes made to Renee today!!

Over the long weekend ...
- picked it up from the shop: LED right headlight (I did the left, right one is too much trouble), new Road 5 GTs (effin' too much money),
- four rides of 60-90 minutes (one with the Gorgeous One as pillion),
- rode it to work; first time to the new job, cruise at 77 mph through the 400/285 constructo-mess,
- QC checked all the dubious electrical work I did this past winter/spring, no sparks or fireballs, so ...

A REALLY FUN TIME, BABY!

Can't wait for EOM! (but have to wait on fairing fasteners, because the dealer doesn't have them in stock? WTF?)

Cleaned her up in preparation for a three day rally in Huntsville with an Ontario based 'ST' crowd. There'll be at least one other FJR there so I won't feel too weird. Don't tell 'them', but I hope they can keep up!....just kiddin', I'm looking forward to it!

I know of a potential 3 FJR's there..... meanwhile on my Honda CBF1000, try to keep up, eh! I'll be the one out front.

If you set them up there already with no intention to ride it before then, you need to have your FJRiders Card suspended. Come on man?? Unless you are leaving in a day or two and taking the scenic route through Yellowstone, you can do much better.

And BTW leaving a Fifth on a seat unprotected can have catastrophic results. Falling off or stolen is totally unacceptable. :stickpoke:
