What did you do to your FJR today?

I reset the clock! After running my battery down to 4 volts last fall the clock lost the correct time. POS, ehh?

I removed the rear seat, removed my Aerostich flat kit and found this which I removed too.



Fortunately nothing was chewed.

Then I found this. I dumped it out, blew it out, swapped it 180° and it's ready for it's last season.



Normally I put hardware cloth over the opening when I put my FJR up for the winter. Didn't do it last fall, I deserve what I got. Fortunately nothing was chewed.

It's supposed to be a cold, rainy day on Wednesday so it probably will be tire day. The tires that are on the bike are almost down to the cords. At the very end of the riding season last year I bought a pair of tires but it has been too cold to do any tire wrestling, but it is no longer an option.

My FJR lives in my garage.

About 120 years ago my house was a barn for an apple orchard that went around a lake. The farm house was across the street. Apparently there was never One Plan to convert the barn to a house. The foundation for the house and garage is a mix of field stone, brick and poured concrete. The house is nail-less post and beam construction using hand cut mortise and tenon joints pegged together with trunnels. Because it's post & beam most of the walls have 8" depth or more. Post construction is vertical, nothing inside the walls runs horizontal like with modern fire stop construction. The foundation simply cannot be made rodent proof. The entire house couldn't have been made more rodent friendly if by design. My Norwegian Forrest cat keeps anything that pokes a nose out under control but there are some places he just can't patrol.

Did you know mice can jump? Yes indeed, they can jump real well. I have seen them make 8 - 10" vertical jumps with no effort. This is how they get access to my motorcycle, a simple, easy jump up and then it's make a home time. It seems they can make the jump with lots of the insulation out of my garage walls with no problem too. My house insulation is pink, the garage insulation is blond. We didn't have a mouse problem until a few years ago when two new neighbors started keeping chickens. My chicken loving neighbors have rodent problems and now all the people around them have a problem too. What's worse is finding little caches of rodent poison that they have brought to my house from the coops. Apparently they are not only immune but like it too. I know that one neighbor uses some kind of blue/green poison pellets and that's what I'm finding in my garage.

We had a log cabin in the woods of northern Ontario for 30+ years . I know something about mice.

Get 5 gal pail with a wire and plastic tube handle. No lid.
Tape the handle so it sits vertical.
Cover the plastic handle in peanut butter.
Put about 4" of water in the pail.
Place pail near mice.

Be sure you check it daily. You WILL be reminded if you didn't after a week or so.

I spooned on the new Road 5. Was going to wait but figured I've certainly have the time now. Last time I changed tires I wrote the torque specs for the fasteners involved and related notes on a sheet. Open folder, pull out the sheet and all values and notes there, no need to search thru FSM.

After seeing the mouse nest above, I pulled the side panel off my FJR (it's still on the lift in the garage) and confirmed that I do not have a nest in the air filter of my bike...

Celebrated that yesterday saw completion of the front brake master cylinder piston and seal swap out followed naturally by a full system bleed.

Made easier by installing the speed bleeders too.

Spooned on a newer [take-off] rear PR4 that I had stashed under the house. Between Reuben Run and my after Christmas blast to Cali, trashed a new rear Z6 in just under 4900 miles. Front Z6 still has a few miles left before a take-off front PR4 goes on... Test ride confirmed that newer tire is more better!

Rode it, had fun, no tickets and home safe. In my book that's a great day. Would have been better if I could have talked Mr. Escapefjrtist into going along. But that young man is a citizen and has more brains than me.

A buddy and I donned gloves, masks, and gowns, and broke down the yoshimura r77 black beauty mufflers. After somewhere north of 30,000 miles, we were very surprised to find that the packing was hardly degraded at all. They simply didn’t need repacking, despite manufacturer recommendations to repack every 7-10K miles. So sort of a mixed blessing. I learned that, if you do it right, you can get by with one repack kit for a pair of r77’s, taking only the rear cap off.

Changed the oil/filter/FD juice. Swapped to the a touring screen,after temporarily reverting to the Cee Bailey (RIP) barn door for a cold morning run last week.

Pulled the wind block out of the “beak” of the bike. I hadn’t “tested” before because it was cold and I had gloves on, but the wind coming through the “beak” is a high pressure blast, while the air coming through over the beak, between the plastic and the windshield is virtually undetectable. So if I want quiet/stillness (or as close as you’ll ever get on an fjr), plugged. Need more cooling, unplugged.

Rode it to work again. With all of the "stay at home" orders around here it seems commuting might be the only riding I get to do for the foreseeable future which really sucks. On the bright side I've been getting a lot of long overdue house stuff done.

Sunday, I had about 250 wonderful miles with 2 of my best riding buddies. The roads were desolate - I mean once you get outside of a town, NOTHING. We had a picnic lakeside lunch (socially distanced, of course), and I gravitated to the curviest roads I could find. The weather was pleasant, just a smidge cool early in the morning under the mesh jacket and pants, but perfect after 10 am.

Is LEO enforcing the stay at home anywhere you guys are?

They don't seem to be doing that here. I think if I commute to work one day and take a scenic route home I will be fine.

They are breaking up crowds and enforcing park closures. But I don't think they are stopping cars.

My BIL and sister still go fishing on the weekends cause their boat is docked at a private home. So boat ramp closures haven't stopped them.

Where I am, there is no stay at home order, although it’s misreported, mislabeled, or it’s misquoted that way. Everyone is asked to isolate. There are activities that are specifically allowed, as long as they’re practiced in a solitary fashion, or at least solitary other than folks you reside with. I see stuff posted regularly that doesn’t come close to the reality of what the “order” is for a given state. Read the actual order. Follow the order.

Every one I’ve read this far specifically allows for recreational activities, as long as they are practiced in accordance with social distancing guidelines.

These aren’t new versions of the RICO act. They are broad pieces designed to help influence the public to interact face to face less, and to gather less. Which is a good thing for everybody.

I saw last night on our local news that police did arrest 2 people in Columbia, PA for being out without having a valid reason for being where they were. They admitted they were just out "hanging out" with no family or friends in the immediate area. Where they were picked up has had a reputation in the past for drug use and dealing so there is that.......

Just because they don't actively encourage motorcycle use does it mean that operating one violates the law...they are hoping the ambiguity has the side benefit of putting enough doubt into people's minds so as to have less people out there "co-mingling".

I am not a lawyer but would like to be paid like one.
