Are these Norm Kern modded filter adapters still available?
I don't play in FB, is there another option to contact Mr. Kern?

Hand tight. Never had any problems removing it or leakage.

I don't think this is a user group technique. I'd swear the oil filter boxes used to say, "Turn until the gasket makes contact and then another 1/4 turn," or something like that. I never read the manual well enough to realize they had a torque spec on there. I'd think that would be pretty random with the rubber gasket and the possibility of oil on the threads.

I have changed hundreds of oil filters and after removing the first filter that was always put on by Hercules, the rest came off pretty easily with just a filter wrench.

Like Bungie, I usually change the oil cold. I figure that's when the most has drained into the pan. It may take an extra minute or two to completely drain, but what's an extra minute or two? Not sure it matters since I don't do our vehicles anymore, so those always get done hot.

There's a lot of rumors and old wives' tales regarding oil changes. Do whatever makes you happy.

As far as the Norm Kern modification, if you know someone with a lathe, or have a place that will do the work, it's simple enough to do. Just remove the union bolt or buy a new one. Shave 60 thousands off the OUTER face of the bolt and reinstall it. After that the bike will accept both concave and convex filters.

Speaking of draining the oil.... here's a peek inside an FJR oil pan. To the right of the drain plug is a baffle, to the right of that the oil pump pickup screen. The oil has to make its way to the drain plug via some narrow paths, then into a 7-8mm wide channel to the drain hole... if you want to help it a bit, while on the centerstand, put a piece of plywood under the right leg of the centerstand, but that would be being anal..... Note, this pic from project bike oil pan that had 90k miles on it. The black spots where the pickup goes is from dirty hardware being thrown into the pan while it was off. No need to be anal.
